The area that is now Lower Melville was first settled by the Dutch in 1640. The community was originally known as “Flowerdael”, meaning “valley of flowers”. In 1837, the area was renamed “Lower Melville” in honor of Alexander Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway (1779-1846), who was Secretary of State for War and the Colonies under British Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel.
Today, Lower Melville is a quiet residential community with a population of approximately 4,000 people. The area is home to a variety of businesses and restaurants, as well as several schools and churches.
